Terri Couwenhoven MS is an AASECT certified sex educator who specializes in designing and implementing sexuality programs and materials for people with intellectual disabilities, families and professionals. This workshop is designed to help parents (and/or professionals) become more comfortable and confident addressing sexuality issues that commonly surface among individuals with intellectual disabilities. Typical sexual learning patterns will be discussed and teaching strategies (how do I teach?) will be shared. Resources and ideas for teaching at home, school, or in the community will be shared.

The morning session is designed for parents and professionals. The afternoon sessions are open to a parent and their pre-adolescent child (between 10-15 years old).

WORKSHOP ONE
9AM – 1PM There’s No Place Like Home for Sexuality Education

This workshop is designed to help parents (and/or professionals) become more comfortable and confident addressing sexuality issues that commonly surface among individuals with intellectual disabilities. Typical sexual learning patterns will be discussed and teaching strategies (how do I teach?) will be shared. Resources and ideas for teaching at home, school, or in the community will be shared.

WORKSHOP TWO
2PM – 4PM Parent and Daughter Puberty Workshop

These sessions are specifically designed for pre-adolescents (usually ages 10-15) with intellectual disabilities who are entering or in the midst of puberty. During this 2 hr program, participants will learn about physical and emotional changes that accompany puberty and ways to manage these changes. Parents and pre-adolescents learn together in comfortable, safe, and fun environment. Concrete, interactive methods are used to improve comprehension. Workshop is presented in gender specific groups.

WORKSHOP THREE
4PM-6PM Parent and Son Puberty Workshop

These sessions are specifically designed for pre-adolescents (usually ages 10-15) with intellectual disabilities who are entering or in the midst of puberty. During this 2 hr program, participants will learn about physical and emotional changes that accompany puberty and ways to manage these changes. Parents and pre-adolescents learn together in comfortable, safe, and fun environment. Concrete, interactive methods are used to improve comprehension.
